This superb antique round wall mirror, dating from the early 20th century, is a fine example of Arts & Crafts period design, crafted in solid oak with its original, thick bevelled glass. The warm honey-brown tone of the oak frame highlights the attractive natural grain, and its oval form, simple yet elegant, reflects the movement’s emphasis on honest craftsmanship and timeless beauty. The bevelled edge of the glass adds depth and sparkle, catching the light in a way that modern flat glass cannot replicate.
The mirror’s surface retains excellent clarity for its age, though there are the expected subtle signs of time – gentle age spots, tiny speckles of foxing, and faint surface marks – all of which enhance its authenticity without diminishing its reflective quality. The oak frame has survived well, although there is some minor cracking to the joints, they remain tight with a solid feel, but also bears the light scuffs, small knocks, and natural patina that come only from over a century of use. The close-up sections reveal the fine joinery, with old finish variations and minor wear at the joint lines, typical of a handmade piece from this era.
On the reverse, the mirror retains its period wooden backboard, secured with age-appropriate fixings. Sturdy modern brass hanging plates have been sympathetically added, the wire was just for hanging the mirror for the images, making it ready to display on arrival. The piece would suit a range of settings – from an Arts & Crafts or Edwardian interior to a rustic country cottage, period hallway, or as a characterful addition to a more eclectic modern space. It could be hung above a fireplace, in an entranceway, or even in a bedroom to add both function and style.
Unlike contemporary reproductions, this mirror carries the weight, depth, and tactile charm of genuine early 20th-century craftsmanship. The aged oak frame, the slight waviness of the original glass, and the naturally mellowed finish give it a unique character that cannot be artificially reproduced. Its combination of practical use and decorative value makes it not just a mirror, but a conversation piece, carrying with it the quiet history of all the rooms it has reflected over more than 100 years.
More on the glass; The beautiful vintage glass has a reassuring weight and substance, a quality you simply don’t find in today’s thin, often distorted modern mirrors. This example features a thick pane with a strong, well-defined bevel, adding depth and elegance to its reflection. For its age, it is remarkably well preserved and remains clear, with only a few minor surface marks that are visible only upon close inspection.
