Wonderful 1917 black and white photograph of a Group of No. 3 Company Special Constables from Nottingham City. A real snapshot of the 'volunteer police force' at that time - of course being during WW1 - a lot of middle aged men, suits and a lot of moustaches! Presumably taken in front of the Nottingham City Hall or Police Station. Wonderful photo, large and still in exceptional condition. Labelled underside giving us the info on Commander Robert. A. Page and the name of the Company. Mounted in a thick (spotted) white card and then framed in a black coated vintage glazed frame (from Boots, not as old as the photo, but still vintage). Wonderful piece of police and WW1 history.
Special Constables were not fully fledged police officers. They were volunteers who had police powers whilst on duty and helped tremendously during the War when 'real' police were presumably away fighting or deployed to more serious tasks. The special constables were brought in to keep order during the war, helping to enforce wartime regulations, guarding important infrastructure and keeping an eye on spies. All things that the women of the time could have done just as well, but as this was 1917, it was a large group of male constables.
The photo is in very good condition. The mount a little less so with some spotting and the frame is very good too. Not perfect but minor marks and the corners a little rough. Ready to hang though. What a treat for someone with an interest in British Police, WW1 volunteering or of course Nottingham.
