This is a fine late 19th century solid mahogany Sutherland table, beautifully inlaid and made with the kind of quality craftsmanship expected of the period. Designed as a highly practical folding table, it takes up very little space when the leaves are dropped yet opens out to provide a generously sized surface, making it an ideal occasional table for use as a side table, lamp stand, or even a small dining or tea table. Its compact profile when closed means it can be tucked neatly against a wall, beside a sofa, or in a hallway, while its extended form makes it a genuinely versatile and useful piece.

The table is crafted in rich mahogany with a mellow patina that only comes with age, the top inlaid with fine stringing around the edges. The legs are turned with distinctive ringed decoration, two swinging outward to support the leaves when open, giving strength and balance. It stands on original porcelain and brass castors, a sign of quality, allowing the table to be easily moved between rooms. The folding mechanism is smooth and practical, typical of the ingenuity of Victorian cabinetmaking.

Condition is very good overall. The top is well preserved with only a few surface marks and two small dents to the central panel, together with a small loss to the inlaid edge, shown in the photographs. These are minor imperfections and do not detract from the overall appearance or usability of the piece. The base is also in good order, sturdy and robust, with only light surface wear commensurate with age. As with all antique furniture of this era, the signs of use add authenticity and character, reminding us that it has been a working part of domestic life for over a century.

This Sutherland table is not just a practical furnishing but a piece of design history, representing the Victorian ability to combine elegance, compactness, and versatility. Whether placed in a living room, dining room, or bedroom, it adds warmth and heritage while remaining eminently usable.
