This antique hand-coloured engraving depicts the historic town of Winchelsea, Sussex, one of England’s famous Cinque Ports, with its medieval gates and sweeping views towards the coast. The scene shows a pair of well-dressed figures walking along a fenced road leading towards the fortified stone archway of the town, framed by trees and sloping banks. The composition captures both the charm of Regency-period fashion and the grandeur of England’s fortified coastal towns.
Dating from around the early 19th century (c.1820–1830), this is an original period print, not a modern reproduction. The soft hand-colouring, in shades of blue, green, and warm earth tones, adds depth and atmosphere to the engraving, making it both a decorative piece and a fascinating historical record of the era. Prints such as these were popular among Georgian and early Victorian collectors, often issued as part of travel series or county views showcasing Britain’s landscapes and towns.
The original drawing and engraving was completed by Will Daniell, and later printed and produced by W Daniell again in 1825 - likely same person or family. Likely part of Daniell's "A Voyage Round the Coast of Great Britain 1814-1825).
The work is beautifully presented in a later gilt-edged wooden frame with a cream mount, allowing the scene to breathe and drawing the eye to the architectural detail. The mount is clean and well-kept, with the print showing only gentle age toning expected of a piece two centuries old. The frame is sturdy and ready to hang, showing surface wear and the odd piece missing consistent with age.
This Winchelsea view is not only a striking piece of antique wall art but also a slice of English heritage, evoking the romance of Regency travel and the enduring beauty of Sussex’s historic towns. It would make a perfect addition for collectors of Georgian engravings, antique coastal prints, or English architectural art, as well as anyone who appreciates the timeless charm of Britain’s historic landscapes.
It is a wonderful antique print in a lovely vintage frame from early to mid 1900s - recently restrung and now ready for hanging. Charming depiction of a period Sussex coastal village with an awful lot of history.
