These two elegant maritime prints, titled “Homeward Bound” and “Outward Bound”, are based on the original paintings by the celebrated 19th-century British marine artist Samuel Walters (1811–1882). Walters was renowned for his detailed and atmospheric depictions of ships and seascapes, and his work remains highly collectable among admirers of naval history and Victorian art.

Printed circa mid-19th century (c.1850s–1870s), these hand-coloured lithographs or engravings reflect the stylistic and technical qualities typical of Victorian maritime artistry. The titles give us their context:
• “Homeward Bound – Passing the Light-Ship, Liverpool”
• “Outward Bound – Off the Rock Fort and Light-House, Liverpool”

Together, they beautifully narrate the story of merchant ships departing and returning to Liverpool, once one of the world’s busiest ports. The scenes are rich in period nautical detail—from the rigging and signal flags to the smaller vessels and choppy sea—each element rendered with care and movement.

Both prints are mounted in original or early 20th-century gilt wooden frames, adding vintage charm. The frames are glazed and appear structurally sound, though they do show some age-appropriate wear. The prints themselves are in good antique condition, with some minor signs of foxing, consistent with age. There are signs of embossed print edges around the paintings. None of this detracts from these lovely maritime antique prints.

These prints would make a perfect addition to any nautical-themed room, heritage property, study, or for a collector of Liverpool maritime history.
