This is a striking antique cast iron fire grate believed to date from the late Victorian period, circa late 19th to early 20th century. The piece showcases classic ornate scrollwork and decorative motifs, including an elaborate crest with foliate detailing and two bold pinecone finials at the front corners. The apron features a raised floral garland in relief, and the whole structure stands on beautifully modelled lions paw feet, adding a sense of grandeur and authenticity to any period interior. The fire basket itself is deep and sturdy, originally designed for burning coal or logs in an open hearth fireplace.
The condition is consistent with age and decades of use. There is considerable surface rust throughout, particularly to the front bars, sides, and underside. Some areas retain remnants of old black paint, while others have developed a rich patina with natural oxidisation. The ironwork is structurally sound, with no breaks or major cracks, though pitting, corrosion and surface wear are visible across all surfaces. The decorative pinecone finials are intact and securely fixed, and the backplate is firmly attached. These authentic imperfections and aged finish make this piece especially appealing for those who appreciate genuine antique salvage and rustic character.
This Victorian cast iron fire basket can be used decoratively in a period fireplace opening as a statement feature, repurposed for holding logs or kindling, or simply displayed as a sculptural architectural element in a country house, cottage or industrial loft. It would also suit restoration enthusiasts who may wish to clean and repaint the iron to restore it to a polished finish.
Please note due to its age and iron composition, this fire grate is heavy and will be shipped with care. It will arrive as shown, with natural wear and surface rust left intact to preserve its authentic antique appeal.
