This is an early to mid 20th century cast iron fire grate, a substantial and decorative piece of antique fireplace furniture that combines function with craftsmanship. Its solid cast iron construction gives it great weight and durability, while its design details reveal the pride of the iron foundries that produced such pieces.

The high arched backplate is cast with a lively running lion motif, a decorative flourish that sets this example apart from plainer designs. The front of the grate is enclosed by a latticework guard with ball finials, both decorative and practical in preventing burning fuel from rolling forward.
