This is an early to mid 20th century cast iron fire grate, a substantial and decorative piece of antique fireplace furniture that combines function with craftsmanship. It was designed to sit inside an open fireplace, holding burning coals or logs while providing ventilation through the slatted base. Its solid cast iron construction gives it great weight and durability, while its design details reveal the pride of the iron foundries that produced such pieces.

The high arched backplate is cast with a lively running lion motif, a decorative flourish that sets this example apart from plainer designs. This motif would have been as much about status as about decoration, a subtle nod to hunting traditions and the heritage of the household. The front of the grate is enclosed by a latticework guard with ball finials, both decorative and practical in preventing burning fuel from rolling forward. At each corner stand uprights finished with turned finials in contrasting metal, lending a sense of refinement and balance to the robust form.

The grate retains its original slatted base, with sufficient gaps to allow air to circulate beneath the fire and ensure efficient burning. The rear and sides are intact and well cast, showing the strength and resilience of 19th century ironwork. The entire piece is solid and stable, standing firmly on its four square feet. The slatted base can lift out.

Condition is consistent with its age and history. The surface displays a uniform rust and patina, the natural result of decades of use and exposure, which many collectors value as evidence of authenticity. There are areas of wear, light pitting, and some surface roughness, but no structural weakness or breaks. The decorative elements, including the lion motif and brass finials, remain clearly defined. The grate is perfectly usable as it stands for decorative purposes, or it could be restored, cleaned, and blackened if intended for regular use as a functioning fire basket.

This antique fire grate is not only a practical piece of fireplace furniture but also a statement of history and style. It would make a striking feature in a period home with an open hearth, but equally it could serve as a purely decorative object. Some buyers now repurpose such grates for creative interior uses, from log storage to display stands, preserving their presence within the home even without a working fireplace.

With its strong form, decorative casting, and evocative patina, this fire grate is an authentic 19th century survivor, a tangible link to the homes and firesides of over a century ago.
