This fender is constructed from solid brass and is of very fine quality.
The central relief panel features a pair of stylized herons or cranes facing one another, separated by a foliot finial and framed in Rococo-style scrollwork, a symbolic motif often associated with peace, longevity, and nobility. The side panels showcase intricate cast scroll fretwork, reminiscent of stylized ribbon monograms. Ornamental flame finials top each upright, a classical reference found in Georgian and Regency design, symbolizing internal light or knowledge.
This is a one-piece welded or bolted structure, non-adjustable, designed to sit flush around a fixed hearth. The moulded base and side rails provide both structural support and stylistic continuity. It’s engineered not only as a spark guard but also as a decorative fire surround enhancement, suggesting it once graced a home of distinction.
Originally highly polished, possibly even lacquered to slow oxidation, the piece has developed a rich aged patina over time. This natural bronze-gold finish features darker low points and lighter highlights on raised relief, giving the piece an unmistakably antique character that modern reproductions can't replicate. Its low-sheen finish is forgiving and complements rustic, traditional, or modern interiors without overwhelming the room.
