This antique brass fireplace fender is a substantial and decorative 19th-century piece, likely dating from the late Victorian era. Made from solid brass with a richly aged patina, it features a pierced gallery design with star and diamond motifs, flanked by elegant rope-twist detailing and finely engraved panels. At each corner sit robust claw feet, giving it both stability and ornamental strength. The front section includes a decorative oval cartouche with a central boss and stylised foliate engraving, adding refined character.
The curved ends and bracket-style rear edges suggest it was designed to fit neatly around a hearth, offering both protection from sparks and an aesthetic frame for a fireplace. It is mounted on an iron base plate, which exhibits surface rust consistent with age but remains structurally sound. The brass gallery is in good condition with no breaks, and the patination shows an attractive mix of mellow warmth and natural verdigris around the detailing. There are signs of use such as surface wear, oxidisation, and minor dents, all of which contribute to its authentic antique appeal.
This piece would have traditionally served as a fire fender, sitting at the edge of a fireplace to prevent burning embers from escaping onto floor coverings. Today, it can be used for its original purpose or styled as a striking decorative element in a period interior, boutique hotel, heritage hallway, or converted property with historic charm. It also works beautifully to frame a non-working fireplace or as an elegant base for displaying vintage fire tools or plants.
The fender remains stable and complete, with all feet secure and the brass structure unaltered. Its craftsmanship and detail reflect a time when even functional objects were made with artistry. A rare and handsome item that brings both utility and traditional character to any fireplace setting.
The condition is very good. You may want to clean it up, but I think it looks great as is.
All intact and sturdy and well put together.
