An elegant antique 1920s folding brass tray table, featuring a richly hand-engraved brass top and a dark hardwood folding base. The tray is beautifully detailed with concentric floral and geometric patterns inspired by Middle Eastern and North African design, and shows a lovely timeworn patina with traces of natural oxidation and colour variation that add to its charm. Perfect as an occasional or more permanent side table. Ready to use!
The base is finely crafted from solid hardwood, possibly teak, with a distinctive interlocking folding design and decorative cut-out arches typical of Moorish and Anglo-Indian furniture of the early 20th century. The brass tray lifts off easily for use as a serving tray and fits on the frame when in use, and the frame which folds flat for storage.
This piece dates from around the 1920s to early 1930s, during the height of the colonial export trade between India, Egypt, and Britain, when such tables were popular in European drawing rooms and conservatories.
In good antique condition, showing age-appropriate wear. The brass surface has natural patina, light verdigris tones, and faint surface marks consistent with age. The wooden base is sturdy with some small scuffs and minor finish wear but no structural issues. It is wonderful as an occasional table perhaps if entertaining or perhaps for more permanent use as a plant table, lamp table, coffee table etc - just be mindful not to knock the tray with force.
It is truly gorgeous to look at and has wonderful charm and age to it, and yet still so usable and functional today.
