This is a decorative yet functional piece commonly used in the 19th century for holding coal by the fireplace. The bucket would have several distinct features reflective of the Victorian era, such as ornate detailing, heavy craftsmanship, and durability.
This item would be both functional and a decorative statement piece in a Victorian home, evoking the aesthetic of that era's ornate, practical design.
Made of solid brass, it has discolouured over the years now it's very much of a darkened brass with the decorative parts still showing they go to finish.
You can of course clean this up after he restore it but it is very fashionable now to just keep them with the age worn look.
You'll see those are some marks to the top and some other general blemishes commensurate with age and use, however the box remains sturdy and intact.
It still has the original lining and both the lining and the base are rusty however there appears to be little corrosion and still feel perfectly OK.
I use mine to keep kindling, matches, and fire lighters.
